| Northwest Flight 253 - Bomber stopped | 26 December 2009 Syed Jafry was preparing for his plane to land in Detroit, Michigan, after a long flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, when he heard a noise that startled him.
"There was a little bit of light, a little bit of -- kind of flamish light and there was fire," Jafry told CNN. "And people began to panic."
For a couple of seconds on Northwest Flight 253, nobody knew what was going on, he said.
That pop, officials say, came from a Nigerian man who ignited a small explosive device as the flight descended into the Detroit, Michigan, area. The White House described the incident as an attempted terrorist attack. The suspect was eventually subdued by passengers and crew.
Abdulmutallab, 23, was charged in a federal criminal complaint Saturday with attempting to destroy the plane Friday on its final approach to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and placing a destructive device on the aircraft, the Department of Justice said.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, went through "normal security procedures" before boarding the flight, according to security officials.
Security has now been ramped up at all major airports! (A little late - PeaceAid) | | Sending the wrong message | 22 August 2009 Scottish Justice Minister Kenny MacAskill's decision to free Lockerbie bomber al-Megrahi is without doubt an outrage. The decision has been condemned by most world leaders. Anyone who thought that Libya would not use this action as a publicity stunt is simply naive and should not be holding any position of power whatsoever. (PeaceAid) | | Eta claimed responsibility attacks on Majorca | 10 August 2009 Bombs in the capital of Majorca yesterday heightened fears that the Basque separatist group Eta is waging a summer campaign targeting the tourist industry.
A first device exploded at about 3pm at a restaurant in Palma de Majorca, the capital, opposite Can Pere Antoni beach. Police carried out a controlled explosion on a nearby second bomb about 15 minutes later.
Later, a third bomb in an empty shopping centre in Plaza Mayor went off. A fourth then exploded in a bar. Witnesses said restaurants and the beach area had all been evacuated. No one was injured and the explosions were modest in size. Nonetheless the attacks will concern the thousands of tourists, including an estimated 30,000 Britons, who pack the island at this time of year.
9 August 2009 Eta has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks in Spain including a car bomb that killed two Civil Guard officers and a separate attack on the tourist island of Majorca.
In the statement released to the pro-independence Basque daily Gara, a regular channel for Eta communications, the Basque separatist group said it was responsible for the July 30 car bomb attack outside a police barracks in Majorca that killed two members of the Civil Guards paramilitary police
It also carried out the June 19 car bomb attack in the Basque town of Arrigorriaga that killed a police inspector the group denounced as a 'torturer'.
| | Australia: Alleged terrorist plot foiled | (CNN 4/8/09) -- Four suspects accused of planning to carry out a terrorist attack on a military base in Australia were arrested in early morning busts across Melbourne on Tuesday, authorities said.
Some 400 federal police officers took part in the pre-dawn raids in Melbourne.
Police executed 19 search warrants in nine Melbourne neighborhoods as part of the investigation into the group, which is suspected of having ties to Al-Shabaab, a Somali insurgent group with ties to al Qaeda, authorities said.
The suspects planned to storm the Australian base with automatic weapons and carry out a "sustained attack on military personnel until they themselves were killed," said Tony Negus, deputy commissioner of the Australian Federal Police.
Details about the suspects began to emerge Tuesday afternoon, with police confirming that a 25-year-old man from Glenroy was charged with conspiring to plan a terrorist act. He was expected to appear in court later in the day, authorities said.
A fifth man, a 33-year-old already in custody on other matters, was being interviewed, police said.
